Hexfall was made for kitchen tables, tired evenings and players with different levels of experience. It keeps the positioning, tension and tactical problem-solving of miniature wargames, while removing the setup, rules burden and frustration that so often stop the battle from even beginning.

WHAT PLAYING HEXFALL FEELS LIKE

A WARGAME AT HEART

Armour, melee and ranged attacks, initiative, movement, flanking and interactive terrain all shape the battle. You get the language and rhythm of miniature wargaming without fighting through layers of artificially bloated rules.

TENSION WITHOUT THE STRESS

A Fight token can appear at any time, so you are always watching the board and preparing for what might happen next. The tension comes from the situation, not from hoping for a lucky roll or being caught out by a rule you did not know.

READY FOR ANOTHER BATTLE

When a game ends, you usually want to reset the board and go again. The next draw gives you a different problem to solve, so you can try a new idea straight away without feeling mentally drained.

Gaming Mat

A flexible, full-colour battlefield mat with the hex grid built right into the design. It gives you everything you need for placement, movement and combat, creating the complete battlefield for a standard game of Hexfall. When the battle is over, simply roll it up and store it away.

Measure 620x280mm with hex size 44mm

3D Terrain

A set of detailed 3D terrain pieces designed to sit neatly between the playable hexes. They shape each battlefield, break up the open ground and make every game feel like a proper tabletop battle.

3D-printed in durable PLA. The STL files are also available as a free download, so you can print additional terrain whenever you like.

Dwarf Army Set

Everything you need to command the Dwarf army, including all blue faction tokens and markers. The large bag holds the hexagonal tokens you’ll draw and deploy throughout the battle, while the smaller bag keeps wound and activation markers organised and within easy reach.

Made from durable Foamex and printed in full colour using high-quality UV printing.

Orc Army Set

Everything you need to command the Orc army, including all red faction tokens and markers. The large bag holds the hexagonal tokens you’ll draw and deploy throughout the battle, while the smaller bag keeps wound and activation markers organised and within easy reach.

Made from durable Foamex and printed in full colour using high-quality UV printing.

Game manual

A detailed 20-page A4 rulebook packed with large illustrations, clear examples and step-by-step explanations. It covers setup, movement, combat and every special token, guiding you through your first battle while answering the rules questions that may come up in later games.

box

Everything packs neatly into one sturdy Hexfall box, including the battlefield mat, 3D terrain and both complete army sets. It keeps the components protected and organised, ready to pack away after the battle and bring straight back to the table next time.

Gameplay

Hexfall combines the clear positional play of chess with the movement, armour, initiative, ranged attacks and close combat of a fantasy wargame. Your goal is simple: protect your own Champions while creating an opening to eliminate your opponent’s.

At the start of each turn, you draw three tokens and decide how to use the opportunities they create. Move warriors, launch attacks, block important routes, place traps or reshape the battlefield with utility tokens. Every token can be useful. The challenge is recognising the best move with the options currently in your hand.

Because the available tokens change from turn to turn, no two battles develop in exactly the same way. There are no hidden army rules, unbeatable units or lists built before the game. Everything that matters is visible on the table, so victory comes from positioning, timing and how well you respond to your opponent.

Rules

Setup

  1. Place the battlefield mat and any agreed terrain, if used.

  2. Choose a starting player.

  3. Each player chooses and places 1 of their 3 Champions. The two starting Champions may not be within 2 hexes of each other.

  4. Put all other tokens, including 2 Champions, into your large bag and shuffle.

  5. The player who placed a Champion first takes the first turn.

1 of 12

Turn

  1. Move 1 friendly Warrior up to 1 legal hex, rotate it, or both.

  2. Draw 3 tokens. If fewer remain, draw all that are left.

  3. Discard at least 1 non-Champion if possible. Every Champion drawn must be played.

  4. Play retained tokens in any order. Keep none for later turns.

2 of 12

Fight Tokens

  • Played or discarded Fight tokens go to your Fight pile.
  • If more than 1 Fight token is drawn together, only 1 Fight may be resolved that turn.
  • Drawing 3 Fight tokens together in the same Draw triggers the Final Fight. Put all 3 in the Fight pile and resolve only 1 Fight.
  • When both players have all 5 Fight tokens in their Fight piles, return them to their owners bags and shuffle.
3 of 12

Placement & Movement

Placement

Place tokens only on empty hexes.

Warriors, Nets, Banners and Walls occupy the hex and cannot share it with another Warrior, Net, Banner or Wall.

Smoke and Explosive Traps are also placed on empty hexes, but a Warrior may later move onto or be placed on that hex.

Tokens cannot be placed outside the battlefield or on blocking terrain.

Move

Move 1 friendly Warrior up to 1 hex, rotate it, or both. A Warrior may also rotate without moving.

A Warrior caught in a Net cannot move, but may still rotate.

Separate effects may move the same Warrior more than once.

4 of 12

Push & Pull

The acting Warrior and target must align through flat sides, not corners.

Push

Adjacent friendly or enemy Warrior: move it 1 hex directly away and optionally rotate it, or rotate it in place.

Pull

Friendly or enemy Warrior 2 hexes away, with 1 empty hex between: move it 1 hex closer and optionally rotate it, or rotate it in place.

5 of 12

Initiative

  • Champions have Initiative 0.
  • A Banner's printed modifier affects adjacent Warriors of either player.
  • Different Initiative values cancel; the Warrior uses its printed Initiative.
6 of 12

Fight

  1. Play a Fight token. Mark every living Warrior with an Activation token.

  2. Resolve Initiative from highest to 0; trace every printed attack with a legal target.

  3. Warriors with the same Initiative attack simultaneously. Assign and apply all damage for that step.

  4. Remove destroyed pieces after the step. A Warrior destroyed before its Initiative does not attack.

  5. After Initiative 0, detonate all remaining Explosive Traps.

  6. Check victory and draws; place the Fight token in the Fight pile.

7 of 12

Attacks & Line of Sight

Each attack icon is a separate hit. Resolve both melee and ranged icons on a side when legal.

Melee

Hits the adjacent hex on that side. Friendly Warriors, empty hexes, Smoke-only hexes and Trap-only hexes have no effect and take no damage.

Ranged

Travels in a straight line. It may pass over 1 friendly Warrior or Champion only. A second friendly unit, any Wall, Banner, Net, blocking terrain or the board edge stops the shot; if no valid target is reached, the attack is lost.

Smoke

Blocks line of sight through its hex. Unlike a Wall, a Warrior may move through, enter or be placed on Smoke. A Warrior occupying Smoke may attack and be attacked.

Targets

Enemy Warriors and Champions are valid targets. Walls, Banners and Nets are attacked even when friendly. Friendly Warriors, empty hexes, Smoke and Traps are not attacked. Permanent terrain is not attacked unless a scenario says otherwise.

8 of 12

Damage & Armor

Base Hit

2 damage

HP

Warrior / Net / Wall / Banner: 2 HP; Champion: 6 HP.

Black Armor

Reduce Black damage by 1.

Blue Armor

Reduce Blue damage by 1.

Red Armor

Reduce Red damage by 1.

  • Resolve each hit separately. Nonmatching Armor gives no protection.
  • Armor covers the whole token, does not stack or degrade, and is never spent.
  • A Banner has all Armor shown on its hex.
  • Bomb/Trap damage resolves immediately; remove destroyed pieces and check the outcome.
9 of 12

Immediate Effects

Move

Move/rotate 1 friendly Warrior.

Push / Pull

Resolve Push or Pull.

Fight

Resolve a Fight; place in Fight pile.

Bomb

Choose an empty or Warrior hex. Pieces there and adjacent take 1 damage, ignoring Armor.

10 of 12

Battlefield Effects

Net

Adjacent Warriors cannot move but may rotate. 2 HP.

Banner

Printed modifier affects adjacent Warriors of both players. 2 HP; all printed Armor.

Wall

Blocks line of sight; attackable and destructible. 2 HP.

Smoke

Blocks line of sight through it. Its occupant may attack and be attacked.

Trap

Untargetable. Ranged attacks may pass over it. Entry detonates it; otherwise it detonates after Initiative 0. Pieces there and adjacent suffer a Red melee hit.

Victory & Game End

Win

  • Eliminate all enemy Champions.
  • If the game reaches the Final Fight, deal more total damage to enemy Champions than your opponent.

Draw

  • Both players final Champions are destroyed in the same Initiative step or effect.
  • After the Final Fight, both players have dealt the same total damage to enemy Champions.

Final Fight

The Final Fight is triggered when a player draws all 3 Fight tokens together.

  • Put all 3 Fight tokens in the Fight pile.
  • Resolve 1 Fight as normal.
  • After that Fight, the game ends.
  • Compare the total damage each player dealt to enemy Champions during the game. The player who dealt more damage wins; equal totals result in a draw.
